Chapter 32
Dante
Everything seems to happen in slow motion. TobiasâMauveâs human partnerâappears out of nowhere just in time to witness Red kill the female fae. The roar that comes from deep in his throat is desperate and filled with rage. Itâs the sound of a person losing someone they love deeply. Never mind that Mauve planned to take off without him.
If I had any control over my gift, I would have foreseen the gun he pulls from behind his coat. Red wonât be fast enough to avoid the bullet. My leg muscles tense as I prepare to jump. I forget the choke collar around my neck and the chain. Before Mauveâs lover pulls the trigger, my body is already in motion, flying through the air. The boom of the gunshot echoes in the room, only a split second before I hear the sound of a bullet zap by my ear. I land on top of Red in an awkward manner, biting my tongue with the impact. The chain attached to me clanks loudly against the marble floor.
It takes me a moment to realize Prythian had this planned all along. I donât know what Mauve did to make Prythian incarcerate her, but the appearance of her lover in the exact moment Red killed the female fae was not a coincidence. Nor the fact Tobias had a gun on him. Prythian wanted this to happen. He even let go of my chain, allowing me to push Red out of the bulletâs path.
All around us, mayhem commences, but the noise is muffled for all I can hear clearly is the sound of my pulse drumming in my ears. Red rubs her muzzle against my face, then licks my cheek. My heart goes off in a mad race, beating out of control in my chest.
She begins to tremble in my arms until sheâs human again. Lust ignites in my core so suddenly it robs me of breath. It spreads throughout my body like wildfire. Iâm aroused like Iâve never been before. Common sense goes out the window. I donât care where we are or that in the background, Leo, Billy, and Armand are fighting with God knows who. My hands find Redâs face, and then Iâm kissing her like nothing else matters. She matches the tempo of my tongue, and her body mimics mine with urgency. If I donât stop in the next second, Iâll take her on the hard stone floor. With a gasp, she pulls away, pressing her hands against my chest.
âDante, snap out of it,â she says with difficulty.
âWhat?â I ask, feeling confused.
âI knew it,â Prythian says from somewhere in the room.
His voice is enough to lift some of the fog from my brain. And then it hits me, or better yet, the scent of Redâs heat hits me. No wonder Iâm so aroused. With great effort, I drop my hands from her face, scooching back for good measure. But the yearning remains, the need to mate overwhelming. Goddamn it. This is impossible.
